Why Dari

Casa dei Bambini, meaning “children's house” in Italian, was the name of the first school Maria Montessori opened in 1907 in San Lorenzo, Rome, Italy. Through Dr. Montessori's observations and work with her students, she discovered their astonishing, almost effortless, ability to learn. The children taught themselves! This simple but profound truth formed the cornerstone of her life-long pursuit of educational reform.

Today, every Montessori preschool classroom for 3-6 year old students is called Children’s House. When I first dreamed of having a Children’s House classroom in my home I decided to call the school Dari, which means “my house” in Arabic, my native language.

It is important to me that I strive to create a school that reflects Dr. Maria Montessori’s belief that Children's House is a place which  allows each child to feel safe, comfortable and independent. It is a home away from home, designed to reflect the size, pace, and interests of the young child.

Shereen Srouji

Director and Lead Guide

I have worked in education for more than 20 years, teaching preschool age children.

I fell in love with the Montessori method when my son Jude joined a Montessori school as a preschooler and I experienced the magic and power of Montessori education first hand. That year, I decided to get my training to become a Montessori teacher.

I love working with preschool age students and watching them blossom as independent learners. I am Montessori trained and accredited by the American Montessori Society and EEC certified. Upon receiving my Montessori training,  I taught at Andover School of Montessori for 5 years before opening Dari Montessori Preschool.
